The UNO Experience: A New Entry into the World of High-Stakes Card Games

UNO started as a unique card game brought to life in the early 70s and has gained so much popularity over the years. Taken under the wings of giant toy company "Mattel" in 1992, the game has become one of the world's top-selling games. Recently, in partnership with the "Palms Casino Resort" in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mattel has announced and launched the "UNO Social Club", transforming the game into an enhanced social experience where people can meet, compete, and make friends at designated sites across America. The UNO Social Club

From July 18 to 20, 2025, and roughly at the time of this writing, Mattel has just launched and introduced one of its best-selling card games into the world of high-stakes card games at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event aims to promote the game in different venues across the USA to bring people together to engage in a fun-filled and competitive experience within a community environment known as the UNO Social Club.

Though many of the intended venues would be held at top casinos and social gaming sites nationwide, Mattel has stressed that the game and its events are for pure social play, as no wagering or gambling will be allowed in the game despite the social club's planned event sites. Also, three new variants of the game will be featured in the launch, and these include UNO Golf, UNO Teams, and UNO Show 'em No Mercy.

The event takes place at the Palms Casino's Kingpin Suite, providing an UNO-themed environment which includes a bowling alley, lounges, drinks, photo-shoot locations, themed décor, and game hosts to shuffle and deal the card decks for the guests. Also, a lucky UNO winner through a recent TikTok contest will also earn a 3-day suite stay.

The UNO Card Game

The game goes way back to 1971 when a barber from Cincinnati, Merle Robbins, and his family had to mortgage their home just to print 5,000 decks of a card game he invented and which they sold out of his barber shop. The ensuing popularity of the game prompted Robbins to sell the rights of the game to the International Games Inc. of Robert Tezak for $50,000, including royalties. Eventually, in 1992, the game was picked up by toy giant Mattel, and the rest was history.

Playing UNO

The objective of the game is for a player to reach 500 points first, through the rounds, in order to win the game. A standard UNO deck has 108 cards with four color suites, Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. Each suite contains one 0, and a pair of each number 1 to 9, plus the action cards Reverse, Skip, and Draw Two. Also included are 4 Wild, and 4 Wild Draw Four cards. In 2018, some of the UNO decks had two additional card types added, which are Customizable Wilds and the Wild Shuffle Hands.

A dealer is assigned, and each player receives seven cards. The game starts with the remaining deck of cards turned downward on the table. A single upturned card starts a discard pile, and the turns move clockwise through the players until an action card is encountered.

On a player's turn, a card that matches the top card on the discard pile can be played (or added to the discard). Card matching can be by number, symbol, or color. A player can play a Wild card or Wild Draw Four card if allowed, as they act similarly to Joker cards. If the player cannot produce a card that matches the top discard card, then a card has to be drawn from the down-facing main deck.

Action cards determine the move of the next player in line, but if it is the first card on the discard pile, it will affect the turn of the first player. A "Skip" card makes the next player lose his/her turn, a "Reverse" card reverses the direction of the player turns, a "Wild" card acts like a Joker, a "Draw Two" card makes the next player draw two more cards and miss the turn, and a "Wild Draw Four" will force the next player to draw four cards and skip. Whoever loses all of their cards first or retains only an UNO card wins the round but must immediately declare it and show it to the others.

Some players just play for rounds, but when scoring is used to determine the overall winner, the score will be based on the opponent's remaining cards.

Again, some players go beyond the standard rules in playing the game. These may include Stacking, where players can stack penalty cards. A Seven-Zero where a seven forces hand swaps and zero passes hands in the play order. A Jump-In will let any player with the exact same card play out of turn.

Since the game was released in the 70s, UNO has reinvented itself over the years. The game has gone through several variations and iterations and has continued to be colorful, appealing, and gamer-friendly. Mattel's latest move with the UNO Social Club taps into a $34 billion tabletop card gaming market as well as provides a face-to-face social experience for both nostalgic long-time players and an incoming younger audience. After all, as far as card games go, UNO in Spanish means number one.
